Team Canada Masters Win Gold
Russia, the reigning tournament champions, knocked the Canadian Women’s Senior National team into the consolation bracket on day one of the Global Cup tournament. As such, Team Canada was as far away from the Global Cup World Senior Championship medal podium as they could get. In their road to redemption, Canada played and won four early day matches against Latvia, Brazil, the U.S.A, and Germany. These four crucial wins forced a re-match in the finals with Russia.
Coming into the final, Russia had waded through the brackets undefeated. With the double-elimination tournament format, this meant that if Canada wanted to take home the top prize, they would have to beat the Russians twice. Canada came through by defeating Russia in three straight sets before winning the final one-set playoff.
"We all pulled together when it really counted," commented Monica Hitchcock, power player & Team Canada captain (Cadadian National team 1977-86).
"It also helped that we had our lucky Canadian toonie under one of the net posts," said Catherine Carter, a Team Canada power hitter and organizer.
Congratulations to Team Canada: Catherine Carter, Val DeRocco, Bonnie Hailstone, Monica Hitchcock, Candy Cane, Hatsue Chow, Audrey Vanderveleden, Sherry Saxton, Karin Maessen, Denise Myhre, Marg Negenman, Hugh Bartlett (Head Coach), George Tokarsky (Team Coordinator).
