SAIT Trojans Win CCAA Silver
(Edmonton) -- On the court, the Limoilou Titans were sporting colourful mohawk haircuts in red, orange, yellow and blue...and now also have the CCAA gold.
The No. 1 ranked Limoilou Titans (Quebec, QC) won the 2010 CCAA Men's Volleyball Championships over the No. 2 ranked SAIT Trojans (Calgary, AB) held at Grant MacEwan in Edmonton from March 11-13, 2010. The final score was 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 17-25, 25-22).
The SAIT Trojans have never won CCAA gold in men's volleyball, winning national silver five times -- in 1981-82, '84-85, 2000-01, 2001-02 and now in 2009-2010.
The enthusiastic fans at MacEwan gym were entertained by the high level of volleyball skill in the battle between the Titans and the Trojans.
The points in the first set flipped back and forth between the SAIT and Limoilou. SAIT had the lead by three points twice but it was the Titans who came back and took over a late lead of four points to win the first set 25-21.
The men of Troy fought hard to tie up the second set 23-23. With a big block for the final point, Limoilou clinched the second set 25-23.
The momentum swung to the Trojans as they carried the lead for most of the third set. SAIT continued to gain more confidence and held onto the lead for a 25-17 win. This set win broke the Limoilou's undefeated set record in the tournament.
SAIT head coach Ryan Marsden, in his third year leading the squad, told his team during the last time out with the score 24-21, "You got to believe." The Trojans played a strong match; however, the Limoilou Titans finished the game 25-22 to win the CCAA gold medal in four sets.
SAIT's Kenny Raewerda (right side, Acme Alberta, Chemical Engineering Technology) and Justin Kilb (setter, Calgary Alberta, New Media Production Design) were named 1st Team All Stars. Trojan Lucas Jacobson (left side, Sherwood Park Alberta, Business) was named a 2nd Team All Star of the tournament.
